Experience
My enjoyment of reading and writing engendered my career in teaching reading and writing. Though my academic background helped me acquire the expertise I needed to teach them, it is with my four years of secondary and two years of college teaching experience that continues to inspire my dedication to helping students learn to be good, and even great, readers and writers. In my private session, I create an environment where your child feels safe to acknowledge her weaknesses and, in turn, demonstrate her strengths. Having this freedom allows her to open up and take control of her learning and start building the confidence she needs to improve and excel in any subject. It's only in realizing these capabilities in herself that she is able to apply the skills and strategies she has learned from our sessions. For without that self-confidence, all she has worked so hard to master will be lost to the pressures of teacher/peer scrutiny (whether real or imagined) and classroom/standardized tests. Through ample practice during and ample reinforcement after their lessons, and constant oral feedback and written assessment of their progress, they will accumulate the abilities necessary to be the best student they can be. Thus, one of my goals for every lesson is for my students to not only learn the required materials but to challenge them to think critically beyond what they already know. Knowledge is power, but curiosity is king! But the most important goal I have for my students is to foster independent thinking. The old adage, "Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day; teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime," rings true for tutors. By having them learn effective, life-long reading and writing habits, they will be able to self-reliantly guide themselves out of the struggles they will encounter throughout their academic journey.
